<h2>Hello, Neighbor!</h2><h3>I’m Kristiana de Leon. I am a dog-mom, coalition builder, a nonprofit board member, an advocate, a former educator and former pandemic-era retail employee, and a two-term city councilmember of a coal town that’s booming into 21st Century life.&nbsp;</h3><img src="https://run.imgix.net/2899e00f-ef24-4b98-b4bd-a8d467ec340b/a367c032-ec74-4a87-a5f5-2e43bc4fab42/a367c032-ec74-4a87-a5f5-2e43bc4fab42.jpeg?ixlib=js-3.8.0&amp;bri=0&amp;con=0&amp;sat=0&amp;high=0&amp;shad=0&amp;usm=0&amp;rect=0%2C529%2C2736%2C3119&amp;w=1500" alt="" title="" caption="" align="center" alignwidth="25" tiltdirection="left" variant="framed"><h4>Because of all of the hats I have worn in my life, and how I’ve worn them, leaders in our community asked me to throw my hat into the ring for this election: my experiences, and the stories that people have trusted me with, have informed me and given me a unique perspective on the most pressing issues facing us all.</h4>As someone in my mid-30s, people of my age and younger have seen constant economic failure. We are aware that we are inheriting a wide variety of crises that didn’t happen overnight but are what keeps us up at night. I know what it’s like to worry that your paycheck won’t actually cover an emergency. I know what it’s like to work a physically demanding job in the midst of forest fire smoke while covering shifts for coworkers who are worried that their apartments will be flooded. And frankly, I’m running because while I’m no longer a teacher, my spouse is. I know that he keeps putting in 10-hour days because he cares about what he does, and I know he makes a difference in the outcomes for his students, and sometimes I just wish our lawmakers met that caring with funding.I am a Humanist who believes in doing the right thing because it is the right thing to do, and making those decisions based on personal experiences and provable data and evidence. I do not have reason to believe that there is any life after this one, and therefore I believe it is my moral duty to do what I can to make sure everyone has as good a chance as possible to live their best lives. Small town politics like in Black Diamond certainly isn't. I’ve kept serving despite difficult moments because of the trust my neighbors placed in me and because this is a labor of love. Even when we don’t always agree, there is a chance for dialogue and finding common ground. I know work in Olympia is similarly challenging, but nothing worth doing is easy and I have the track record of sticking with hard work to the finish line.</h4>I chose to serve my city because I saw that my city, like me, was at a crossroads in life. Like so many cities in this state, we are growing a lot. However, it is starting to become an unfunded mandate where state laws expect us to grow but do not fully provide the guidance or money that can help us get financially stronger while taking care of the immediate needs of people moving here, like for our roads and safety services.&nbsp;I have advocated for policies that help cities like mine find and build affordable housing. We've become part of the climate solution. I am who I am: a direct voice that tells the very common, but often unheard, stories of cities like Black Diamond. I plan to continue serving my city on the council to make sure that my policies are grounded in reality for 5th LD cities.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Our Campaign’s Top Issues

In the realm of education, the call for change reverberates beyond the simplistic notion that "we just need to pay teachers more." While fair compensation for specialized skills is crucial, we must confront the stark reality that the challenges faced by educators, paras, office workers, custodians, and bus drivers extend far beyond any paycheck.The unsustainable burden placed on schools as a panacea for every societal woe must cease. Relying on levies and bonds to fund essential services is an inadequate and flawed approach. It's time to address systemic issues head-on.We must tackle school lunch debt and ensure every child has access to nourishing meals. Urgent action is needed to reduce class sizes at all levels and embrace alternative learning methods, acknowledging that a one-size-fits-none 19th Century Education model no longer serves our diverse communities.Youth mental health cannot be an afterthought. Both in and outside of schools, robust programs must be fully funded, culturally relevant, and destigmatized. Training and rigorous standards shouldn't be heaped solely on teachers; educational leaders must share the responsibility.The influence of for-profit curriculum monopolies as gatekeepers in schools must be diminished, prioritizing the needs of students over profit margins. Meaningful dialogue with youth about their fears regarding gun violence is essential, and decisive action must follow.We stand in solidarity with educators who champion basic needs for kindness and empathy, often becoming casualties in unending culture wars. It's time to shift the narrative, recognizing that a comprehensive and sustainable approach to education demands a multifaceted strategy that goes beyond monetary considerations.The call for change is not a platitude; it is a rallying cry for a fundamental shift in our approach to education. As we embark on this journey, let us prioritize the well-being of students, educators, and the entire educational ecosystem.

Prioritizing our Paramount Duty

Accountability is for everyone - for every politician, and for every private resident. When someone hurts another, including by stealing, hurting their property, or far worse, then of course there need to be consequences. And those kinds of consequences need to make sure that people who do harm are set on an upward spiral and don’t continue to make the same bad choices.&nbsp;With that in mind, I believe in crime prevention. Crime prevention doesn’t always look like crime prevention on the surface, but all the different ways we create a better community also means a safer community. In other words, keeping people housed and fed, and not on the brink of shoplifting or stealing car parts to pay the bills, is actually crime prevention. Providing more mental health treatment helps encourage people to not turn to addictive substances as coping mechanisms. Giving more people more access to job training and education is crime prevention. Making sure cities have sidewalks and well-lit streets is crime prevention. Funding parks and recreation programs, so that more youth can participate in safe activities that aren’t pay-to-play, is crime prevention.&nbsp;Certainly, that is not the full solution, but we need to recognize that we need to respond to community needs long before first responders show up. On my city council, I have been the one to raise these important questions about how we spend our very limited dollars in ways that have the biggest net benefit, and that includes being proactive about how we keep crime from happening in the first place. I have <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.courierherald.com/opinion/therapeutic-courts-work-county-leaders-should-embrace-them-guest-columnist/">championed therapeutic courts</a> as alternatives to jail sentences for drug rehabilitation. It’s not only the moral thing to do, it’s the pragmatic thing to do.And when we do need first responders to show up, let’s continue to prioritize tools and methods that are evidence-based and that focus on keeping tense situations as calm as possible. Nobody’s life - not an officer’s, not a victim’s, and not a perpetrator’s - is worth a stolen 2001 Mazda. Let’s not lean into the fear-based narratives and instead keep our focus on what we know actually works.&nbsp;

Being Smart on Safety

Just like in any job, we can’t expect to work for free. Nor should we expect that the things in life that we either need or want come free. The same thing goes for paying for the services we all benefit from, including better schools with kids that aren’t hungry, making sure people don’t end up on the streets for lifesaving medical care, and fixing those darned potholes.&nbsp;But how we pay for what we need is up to us, and our current model is not working. We constantly make working people and lower income people pay the highest in taxes. Gas taxes are definitely out of control, and getting more old-fashioned by the minute as more people drive cars that use less gas. Sales taxes are too high. It is outrageous that schools need supermajorities just for new buildings.&nbsp;And for goodness’ sakes, property taxes are bringing out the worst of us, from causing tense fights over school funding, to the very real fears of retired folks who are suddenly becoming outpriced of their beloved homes.&nbsp;Our cities, fire departments, schools, and more, are fighting for pennies on the dollar, when some of the most incredibly wealthy people live in our state and are being subsidized by our hard work - and that’s not okay. If you can pay 50 cents extra dollars on your gallon of gas for the roads they use, then surely the ultra-billionaires can part with the top of their earnings for the roads they do business on.&nbsp;What I am for is finding ways to ask for those who have benefitted from our hard work to pay it forward. And I don’t mean the folks who got their dream car or took a dream vacation or bought a dream home with some leftover savings - I mean the folks whose worth is hard for us to wrap our heads around.&nbsp;It’s time for us to do what’s right and get that ass-backwards tax code’s rear in gear.

Tax Fairness

So many people become bankrupt and even lose their homes because they can’t afford to pay medical bills. The fact that this is the story for people who sleep in tents, in the shadows of some of the most prestigious medical institutions and biggest businesses in the world, is a moral failing on our part. I remember one medical bill just for one exam that was the amount of an entire month’s paycheck, but it was for a condition that would have made it nearly impossible for me to work due to chronic pain. This story is far from alone. If we want people to work to pay the bills, then we need to make them able to work without fear of those bills. The time is yesterday for listening to recommendations from the single payer healthcare commission and acting on them. We have the money to take care of each other, so why don’t we?&nbsp;Also, I am an adoptee who is tired of adoption being used as a pawn in the attacks on reproductive freedom. I am sickened that the latest Supreme Court referred to “the domestic supply of infants” but it accurately shows that much of adoption is an open market, rather than something that should be safe, legal, and rare, with trauma therapy that should be mandatory for all involved.&nbsp;All reproductive care, including abortion care, is healthcare. Adoption and foster care are not alternatives, but they are institutions that also need fixing yesterday. I believe in expanding access to all healthcare, and in placing greater scrutiny on the institutions that largely get a pass to the detriment of our most vulnerable youth.&nbsp;

We need to recognize that Reproductive Healthcare is Healthcare.So many people become bankrupt and even lose their homes because they can’t afford to pay medical bills. Healthcare as a Human Right

Whether it’s on housing, climate change, or transportation: let’s face it, when we think of cities in Washington, we often think of the biggest ones. So often, we see policies created for cities like Seattle in mind, but that don’t fit the realities of places like my town of Black Diamond. We can see Seattle from our highest hill, but in a lot of ways we are a world apart.&nbsp;For example, how do we encourage mass transit in rural and suburban areas that don’t have it? How do we meaningfully include the voices of people who love their rural areas, while also recognizing that more people are moving here? How do we make sure that cities not only have the guidance they need, but the funding they need, to make state projects happen? How do we better empower cities to create plans that make us unified and stronger together, but still individually distinctive?One issue that sticks with me is the frustration on State Route 169. It is one of our few roads in and out of town, but big projects related to safety and access got delayed because the state didn’t see it that way. This was especially bad when the state tried to stall our main projects only for a mandate on salmon passage.I spoke up loudly and often about the need for the both/and, and not just “or” when it comes to safe passage for fish and humans alike.&nbsp;These are the kinds of climate policies and state actions that give climate change work a bad name: when neighbors like mine feel left out and deprioritized from something they rely on. What happened in Black Diamond is not unique, but it is the kind of perspective I will bring to the work in Olympia.&nbsp;

3 out of 4 of the school districts serving my city alone* had bonds or levies fail in the last two years.
This is full on crisis mode. And without investing in education, we can't actually address any other crisis.
